Something Beautiful...

Embarrassing to admit, but I've had cookbooks and glass goblets and glasses in boxes under my buffet since we bought this house 3 years ago. I do not have adequate cupboard space to hold the glasses because they aren't stackable. And I didn't have any place to put my cookbooks (never mind that I can't remember exactly where I stored them in the other houses I've lived in...) So up until about 12 days or so ago, this is where the recipe books that I currently used were housed:

When we returned from Michigan, we brought back my Grandma Fritz's buffet, which replaced the ugly one I had that held no nostalgia. I remember Grandma's little black dog, Mandy, laying under her buffet both in the big house she lived in and the little house she moved to for the last several years of her life :) This additional piece of family heirloom along with Grandma Wightman's table and chairs in that room gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. So when Tony realized that the glass-doored bookcase (that had housed my parent's set of World Book encyclopedias - my era's "Internet") wouldn't work in our bedroom and wondered aloud about putting it in the dining room, I jumped all over that idea. A major improvement I believe and how nice to have those boxes unpacked!

The slightly recessed top is a wonderful place to display some of my treasures...Willow Tree figurines; a clock that was the focal point of the funeral spray for my dad from Tony's business; a piece of pottery from my mother-in-law purchased from a trip to Sight and Sound (signifying the relationship between Ruth and Naomi), a card that touched my heart because it says just the right words regarding my recent losses and a picture that I felt compelled to buy for my dad on our last visit with him (it has Romans 5:3 & 4 on it).

Looks nice Sara. I like that clock. It's so nice to have something like that to keep after all the flowers die. I saw some really neat ideas at Dale Bailey's funeral. Lots of keepsakes for the family.

That is really nice. I'm glad you have these things to remind you of your parents. The bookcase is a real treasure and valuable, too!!
