Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Of course during this season we all think about things for which to be thankful…so what will it be this year? The same old thing…family, friends, food, shelter, Christian heritage? Those and many more! I think of all that we have and all those in the world who lack. It snowed last night but I was able to sleep soundly in a cozy bed inside a warmly heated house. How many people shivered through the winter night in Pakistan because they lost their home in the recent earthquake? I had breakfast, lunch, and even a treat of Pepsi and chocolate today? How many people in Ethiopa and Haiti consider themselves lucky to get a bite of bread or a few grains of rice today? I sit here in front of my computer in my pajamas waiting for my husband to come home with groceries for our special meal tomorrow. How many single moms had to get up and go to work today and are still wondering how they are going to pull off a special Thanksgiving celebration when they don’t have anyone special to share with them the responsibilities and pleasure of the day?
And then I think of the mercy and grace God has bestowed on my family and me! My mind goes back to the words of Mark Lowery concerning a pity party he was having when he traveled and sang and hardly got enough offering to buy gas let alone McDonald’s. He was whining to God and this is what God told him, “Mark…anything above burning in hell is a privilege!” Ouch! When you think about it, it is true…we can be going through the worst trial of our lives financially, physically, emotionally, even spiritually, but when it comes right down to it…if we are not in hell, we are privileged. Even if we can’t find ANYTHING to be thankful for this year, every single one of us living here on this earth at this moment can be thankful for the fact that we are not burning in hell.
Have a Happy, Blessed Thanksgiving! And don’t forget to tell God what you are thankful for!
