...and after looking for a picture of the author, I think I know why - looks like he may have been my father's mentor in comedy.

Yup, sounds just like Dad! He always said he was "39, just like Jack Benny" - and I always asked, "who was Jack Benny?" Dad said he was a comedian from years ago. So guess that was his "other" mentor!
