I've had a friend or two during my lifetime that have been awesome at saving money with coupons. Whenever we have bought an Early Edition Indy Star, I clip about $1.50 worth of coupons and then half the time they expire before I use them. No savings there for me. Factor in all the time spent clipping them and I'm in the hole.
One day at a Ladie's Bible Study, we had this discussion (no, I don't think you'll find coupon clipping in the Bible). I was glad to find that I wasn't alone. So, the discussion continued until we had analyzed why there were two sides to this coin. We finally concluded that those who were brand specific were the ones who didn't save by clipping coupons. Where those who were willing to switch brands to which ones were on sale that week and combined those savings with a coupon - they saved bundles of money!
But I am much to stubborn to change to a different brand every week. I guess that goes along with my personality of being slow to change :) I prefer Wisk laundry detergent. If for one reason or another, I am forced to purchase another, my next choices are Era then Tide or All, respectively. Last week, I tried to switch to Snuggle fabric softener, whose scent I LOVE! But I had been using Bounce throughout the winter and guess what I discovered? Snuggle just doesn't cut the static electricity like Bounce does. I probably hadn't noticed this because I used to use store brand fabric softener. After much frustration with electric heat in my house (although that is cause for less frustration on my husband's part when paying bills :) and four long-haired females and nightmares of static, I finally discovered that if I put out a little more money, I could cut down on a little bit of stress. Nuf said?
So there you have it, my preferences for laundry detergent and fabric softener. I bet you'll all sleep better tonight!

I am not good about clipping coupons either. If I do, I am like you and I put them in a drawer only to let them expire! As for my laundry detergent preferences...I always use liquid Tide and either Downy or Snuggle. I like the "April Fresh" scent! (I have the front loading washer and dryer so I have to use the special "High Energy" stuff!) Now you will sleep better knowing what I use! :)
My preferences - I used to use Era and Downy but have been using Melaleuca brand for both for about 6 months. I do like Era and Downy together and will use it again if I ever run out of my other stuff and forget to order or if I get tired of the same scent and want something different for a change! I usually stick with a certain brand of laundry care but when it comes to shampoo, conditioner, etc., I change often because I get tired prettu quick of the same scent. Sometimes I buy something different before I'm even finished with what I've got! It was worse when I was pregnant.
I am very ornery about my brands and very forgetful about the coupons. I finally stopped keeping them, because I knew I'd be throwing them out in 6 months. It's easier to just stock up when it's on sale.
I don't know if I have ever clipped a coupon. I always think I am going to start...but I doubt it. I use Melaleuca, but if I run out I usually get Tide or Era.
I religiously clip coupons and saved $35.00 at Kroger today (in one trip)!
I'm not terribly picky with brand names, but I do have preferences (Prego spaghetti sauce over Ragu). I usually just go with whatever is cheapest.
When the stores were giving 3xs the amount the the coupon rather than double, my sister would actually get ALL her groceries for a family of 6 and they would give her back CHANGE!!! Now that is dedicated! Of course, the 3xs/coupon value stopped quickly.
I use a couple here and there, but mostely on grooming things or paper products.
