Being Big

Today I overheard a conversation between Kerrigan and Janae’s teacher, Mrs. Spangler.  It went like this…

Kerri: My mommy doesn’t want me to be five*.

Mrs. S: Oh really?

Kerri: Yep, so, I’ll just pretend that I am 4 and a half!

Mrs. S:  Well, that’s good.  Pretending is fun!  I know! How about if I pretend to be you and you can pretend to be me?  Blake [my grandson] and I do that a lot!

Kerri:  (nods hesitantly)

(pause)

Mrs. S:  (ready to leave the office, turns to Kerrigan)  Good-bye Mrs. Spangler! (whispers “now you say, ‘Good-bye, Kerrigan!’ “)

Kerri: (softly and a little uncertain) Good-bye, Kerrigan!

Mrs. Spangler left the room and Kerrigan came up behind me at my desk.  “Now I’m going to pretend to be me again…being big is HARD!”

*I thought for quite awhile on why she made the statement about her age, then realized it must stem from awhile back when I realized that I was very sick on both Britnee and Janae’s 5th birthdays.  So, I told Kerrigan I didn’t want her to turn five, just stay four and be my baby.  Kids remember the funniest things and take them to heart, don’t they?!
